Food and You

Common side affects of cow dairy are:

  • Swelling-histamine reaction (total body swelling)
  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Temper tantrums in children
  • Acne
  • Yeast control problems
  • Phlegm
  • Severe food allergies that can lock up muscles so that they tear and rip with exercise causing severe muscle and tendon damage
  • Immunity challenges – inner ear swelling, dizziness, ringing in the ears, heart palpitation, eye twitching, sweat profusely, and rotten breath

Great alternatives for cow dairy are Goat or Sheep dairy, Almond milk, Almond cheese or Rice milk. Goat and Sheep dairy are supurb because
their hormones are much lesser than those found in cows.  So the thyroid is not going to be over worked. There is also Goat ice cream that tastes really good and most people don’t know the difference when they have it. For those of you who think Goat or Sheep dairy is not to your taste or you just don’t eat things with a face, that’s fine. Almond milk or cheese is a great substitute because it is a protein and it has a lot of calcium in it.
Rice ice cream is really good and is called Dream. But nothing in the world is going to taste like cow milk so when you are testing out the different milks keep an open mind to experience the different tastes.

Corn

Have you ever wondered why when you eat corn it comes out whole when it comes out the other end? The answer is that when corn hits
the stomach, the stomach flips out because corn has too much sugar for the body. When people in our office have lower back pain we suggest
that they eliminate sugar and corn just to see if it will help. Usually without question their lower back pain decreases tremendously. But
beware because the synthetic (biologically engineered) form of corn is much worse than whole corn.

Corn and biologically engineered forms of corn:

  • High fructose corn syrup
  • Corn starch
  • Maltodextrin

Soy

Soy is another problematic food for patients we see in our office. The major problem with soy is that it has too many estrogens which will affect peoples’ hormones. Women don’t need to add any more estrogens because a woman’s body makes them. Men really don’t need them either.  In fact, it sometimes can cause men to grow breasts. Also soy is biologically engineered and that’s why there are some many estrogens in it.

Soy includes:

  • Edamame- Soy beans
  • Soy bean lectin
  • Soy bean oil
  • Tofu
  • Miso
  • Soy Cheese

Fat

How to Balance fats:
There are hot fats, which are bad fats and there are cold fats, which are good fats. When you eat good cold fats it’s like putting good oil in your car; it lubes everything up and helps the machine run properly. Hot Fats are usually cooked meats, roasted nuts & seeds, butter, cooking with oil, chips, or melted cheese. Cold fats are avocado, raw nuts & seeds raw nuts & seed butter, uncooked oil, cheese, sushi (usually). When you eat one of the hot fats you must balance it with a cold fat so make the gallbladder happy.

For example, if you are at a party and they have chips, then use guacamole to balance the fat. If you don’t like guacamole then a handful of raw nuts will do the treat.

The raw or uncooked fats really help the skin and nerves to be happy. The Omega-3-6-9 essential fats are very important to the body’s well being because they coat the nerves to allow your body to calm down.

Omega 3 are cold-water fish-epically tuna, avocado, Flax seeds, Hemp oil and some nuts.
Omega 6 are beef, chicken, vegetable oils, and nuts.
Omega 9 is straight olive oil.

Eating Often for Your Thyroid

What the Thyroid is in control of:

  • Brain function
  • Brain rhythm
  • Depression
  • Brain activity
  • Temperature in the body-cold hands, feet, and nose
  • Heart rhythm and function
  • Kidney bloating
  • Kidney rhythm
  • Hormone conversion in the Liver
  • Metabolism
  • Dry skin
  • Dry mucus membranes (ears, nose, mouth, and Private areas)

When you eat every 2 hours the thyroid will function at top speed and in turn encourage everything to work the same. When the thyroid is happy everything is usually happy.

Exercise

Exercise helps us in many ways

Many stressors affect us mentally, but we can handle them better by taking care of ourselves PHYSICALLY. Here’s how:

EXERCISE REGULARLY
Exercise can help rid the body of the "stress hormones" that build up during periods of stress.

IMPROVE YOUR APPEARANCE
Even moderate exercise just three times a week can have you looking slimmer and more toned. And by feeling better, usually helps us give you more confidence, even more empowered.

EAT SENSIBLY
Eat a nutritionally balanced diet and make sure there are snacks in between each meal. Drops in blood-sugar levels can make you feel even more stressed.

GET ENOUGH SLEEP
A lack of sleep can cloud your judgments and generally leave you poorly equipped to handle challenges that come your way.

Stress Eating

How to Survive STRESS Eating through the Holidays

By Shannon Eggleston

If you stress eat, ask yourself “what is my stress?”

  1. Breathe, take 10 deep breaths…
  2. To feel better NOW think:

    N
    utritionOxygen

    Water

  3. Pray… look into yourself and ask for help. Food isn’t going to change it. Ask yourself “what is the trigger?”

If it is just stress then food isn’t going to change it.

  1. If you’re Hungry, eat something good for you.
  2. If you’re Angry, walk around the block, punch a pillow. Anger is physical, let it out.
  3. If you’re Lonely, call someone, write a letter… Dial and smile =). Have a list of friends, mentors, 12 step partners, Board of Directors.
  4. If your Tired, it is easier to be frustrated, crabby, unhappy and upset. Lie down and go to sleep. Sleep 8 hours a night. If you can’t sleep, lie down and read something good.
  5. Drink water. Sometimes our bodies are thirsty and we think we are hungry. Side effects of thirsty are: tired, lazy, slow, dry skin, dry mouth, lazy eyes, headaches and craving sweets.

Acupressure and Nutrition for Healing

Healing Points of Acupressure and Nutritional Tricks for Healing

By Shannon Eggleston

I use acupressure points to stimulate healing. They are 9000 years old – tried and true. The study of Traditional Chinese Medicine uses nutrition, exercise and bodywork to heal people completely. Here are some points to reduce pain and the correlating nutritional tricks as well.

Basic Suggestion on How to make points feel better:

  1. Gently and firmly press point until pain or tension gone
  2. Breathe deeply and comfortably 3 or 4 times or until pain or tension is less
  3. Take at least 3 breaths on each point and start again, until pain or tension is gone

There are lines of energy on the body, connected by healing points, similar to “dot to dot” drawings for children. These lines are called Meridians. The dots and lines are the same on both sides of the body (right and left).

Nutrition Tricks for Peak Performance
Eat real food. Less to no sugar.

Eat low glycemic fruits instead of processed goodies. No sweets after dinner- especially before race day.

Find out what foods make your body weak. Notice how foods affect your performance.

Watch out for these foods-most people have reactions to them!

  • Corn – soda, chips, starch, syrup, Maltodextrin, Dextrose
  • Wheat – breads, crackers, noodles
  • Caffeine – soda, chocolate, tea, coffee
  • Soy – tofu, processed food, soy sauce
  • Sugar – cookies, candies, sodas
  • Aspartane – diet sodas, sugarless gum and snacks
  • Dairy – milk, cheese, sour cream, butter, and cream cheese

Some reactions, that people have when one of these foods affects them, are stiff joints/bodies, tired muscles, swollen feet, watery eyes, headaches, problems sleeping, cold/ flu like symptoms, can?t focus, and low energy.

Healing Scars with Cold Lasers

What does cold laser / soft light therapy actually do?

This is a high intensity light or energy that operates at a specific frequency to increase the blood supply to the area. This is used by the injured cells to facilitate repair of the injured tissue. It does not have any adverse affects on healthy tissue with the exception of the eye. DO NOT EXPOSE LASER POINTERS, OR SIMILAR DEVICES TO THE EYE!!! Application of 4 -5 minutes to the area may require anywhere from 4 to 7 treatments. Cold lasers have been used in Europe for over 20 years, but just in the last few years they have been approved for use in the United States for many different treatments. If you have a scar(s) that needs additional laser work, or a large number of scars you will be instructed to set up an appointment for an actual laser appointment. The appointment will take approximately 10 minutes. The laser that is used for this is much greater in power, and covers a much larger area.

Do the scars ever pose a problem in the future?

Yes, it is possible that they can become “active” again after months or years, and may need some additional attention. This is another reason why periodically getting your nutrition check makes perfect sense… so we can catch those potential issues before they affect your health.

Healing Scars with Renavator

How to use Renavator: Renavator oil should be thoroughly rubbed into the scar at least once a day… two to three times is best. This should be continued for at least 90 days. Renavator needs to be completely mixed up before use. You will notice a white substance on the bottom of the bottle, this does need to be completely mixed in before applying to your skin, or the complete benefits will not be achieved. This can be done by vigorously shaking the bottle, running it under warm water, or using a low heat dryer to slightly warm up the product.

It is estimated that the high quality oils alone will handle 50% of scar problems, cold laser or light therapy will affect 70%, and the two applications combined will handle about 90%. In a small number of cases they may have to be referred to a physician that specializes in neural therapy where they have to actually inject the scar by needle with a substance to facilitate healing.

Scars, Scars, Scars

Scars on the body can sometimes result in interference to the communication pathways from organs to the brain. It is estimated that about 80% of our sympathetic nerve fibers are in the skin. If these scars are acting as a road block to these communication pathways then health can be adversely affected by causing interference to proper function

How yo use Wheat Germ Oil or Sesame Seed Oil for your scars:
Wheat germ oil, or sesame seed oil, should be thoroughly rubbed into the scar at least once a day… two to three times a day is the best. This should be continued for at least 90 days. The oil is basically food for the skin to help it repair. Some scars can disappear, fade or not change at all. The oil is very sensitive to air, and thus has to be packaged in a gel cap. To open the gel cap you can simply pop it with a pin to get oil out. If you have large scars, many scars, or burn we will recommend a product called Renavator so you don’t have to open a large number of gel caps.  (See our next post on Renavator for more)
